Shipping & Logistics Test Dataset preview

About this test dataset

A year of shipments from four fictional warehouses through four fictional carriers: seven related tables with consistent keys. Each shipment has one or more packages with dimensions, actual weight, dimensional weight and billable weight; a shipping cost computed from the service level's rates; a promised date; and a time-ordered trail of tracking events (label created, picked up, hub scans, delays, out for delivery, delivered, failed attempts and returns). Shipment status always matches the latest event, and the data is frozen at an as-of time, so some shipments are still in flight. It's useful for building tracking pages, ops dashboards, on-time-delivery reports, rate calculators and SQL exercises. 22 consistency checks run on every build.

Questions

Are the carriers and rates real?

No. The carriers, service levels, rates, warehouses and hub towns are invented, and the 139 dimensional-weight divisor is a common industry-style figure used for illustration. Don't use this data to quote real shipping costs.

Is any of this real customer data?

No. Names are random first/last combinations, addresses use made-up street and town names, emails use the reserved example.com domain and phones use the fictional 555-01xx range.

What does "adds up" mean?

Package counts and weights roll up to the shipment; billable weight is the greater of actual and dimensional weight, rounded up; cost equals base rate plus rate per pound times billable weight; promised dates follow the service level; the status matches the latest tracking event; pickup and delivery times match their events; delivery events happen in the ship-to city. The full list is in SCHEMA.md.

Which databases does the SQL work with?

The schema and inserts use portable SQL types (INTEGER, TEXT, NUMERIC, BOOLEAN, DATE, TIMESTAMP). They load as-is into SQLite and PostgreSQL. For anything else, use the CSV files with your database's import tool.

Can I use it in a course or a product demo?

Yes, including commercial courses, demos and seed data inside your app. You just can't resell the dataset itself as a dataset.

Is this a subscription?

No. One payment of $19 and the files are yours to keep.
